With its Master’s Program in Web Science, the Institute for Web Science and Technologies (WeST) at the University of Koblenz-Landau is one out of 100 winners in the federal competition „Landmarks in the Land of Ideas 2015“. In this year, the competition’s slogan is „Urban Space. Rural Space. Cyberspace!“ By this, the initiative „Germany – Land of Ideas“ and Deutsche Bank honor ideas and projects aiming at the challenges of the digital transformation. With its Master program in Web Science, Institute WeST contributes to the shaping of a connected world: It empowers students to understand and master the technical, social, political, and commercial challenges of the web.
Innovations For a Digitally Connected World
Nationwide more than 1,000 research organisations, companies, start-ups and associations have submitted their trendsetting projects. An independent jury of 18, supported by an advisory board, elected 100 winners in six categories: Economy, culture, science, environment, education, and society.
The Master's Program is the only one of its kind among all prize winners: It is the only study course that received an award. It is aimed at people who are interested in technical, commercial as well as social aspects of the Web. „The Web is the biggest construct of mankind“, Professor Steffen Staab explains his motivation to create the Master’s Program. „But until now it is still unclear, what happens when for which reason in the Web. We want to change that.“
One Exiting Year, Full of Competition
Now, a year full of competition and events begins: On 19 May, all 100 winners meet in Berlin for a network meeting. Institute WeST will host its award ceremony on 16 June, in combination with the second transfer day between science and economy. In autumn, the public will elect the winner of the audience award. The winner will be honored in November, together with the federal winners of each category. Each of these events offers opportunities for expanding the participants’ network in the Land of Ideas.
