Immediately after serious events social media is a crucial source of information for journalists. Here they can find eyewitness reports that are extremely valuable. German news service Tagesschau describes the procedure after the car bombs in Instanbul on 7 June 2016 in their blog (German language only).
But how can the relevant information be extract from the vast amount of posts in social media? The European research project REVEAL, in which Institute WeST is a consortium member, published a guideline for finding breaking news on Twitter. The journalists from Tagesschau have used this guideline for their report.
The REVEAL project develops tools for extracting hidden structures in social media, such as the impact or credibility of information. Institute WeST investigates the provenance and context of the material.
