  • The network ITK & Neue Medien serves as a communication platform and representation of interests for ITK companies in the Koblenz region. The meetings of the network are a lively exchange between companies and experts from research and development. The next meeting of the network will take place on Thursday, 14 September 2017 at 6 pm at the University of Koblenz (Building E, Room E113). Prof. Dr. Steffen Staab will present the Institute for Web Science and Technologies as well as the highly discussed topic of artificial intelligence.

  • Keya Kasham and Roman Sokolov, two students in Master Web Science won second place together with three other members at the startup weekend 2017 in Koblenz with their idea for the sales machine Eggcellent. This machine should enable people to have a quick breakfast by means of an app. Meanwhile, the team is working on the implementation of a prototype. An exact target group still has to be defined for this purpose.

  • In August 2017, the Institute for Web Science and Technologies (WeST) received the Best Student Paper Award for their work on understanding cognitive load when typing with eye gaze. The work focuses on the need to understand cognitive load along with other metrics that is conventional when conducting eye typing experiments. This work is a part of the EU Project MAMEM that aims to help users with neuromuscular conditions operating various computer applications.

  • Influence of digital technologies on both individuals and society is controversially discussed. A two-day Leopoldina-symposium  (Berlin, July 10th -11th, 2017) on digitalization and its impact on individuals and society looked into possibilities, chances and risks of digitalization.

  • Last year the scientific discipline Web Science became 10 years old. To celebrate this occasion WebScience@10 events of the Web Science Trust Network happend all over the world on Novemer 29th, 2016. L3S research center and WeST organized a WebScience@10 event in Berlin with many well-known speakers.

  • On 4th and 5th May the IT & Economy Forum IT2KO will take place in the congress center Rhein-Mosel-Halle in Koblenz. The event is a conference, networking, and communication platform for intelligent, digitally interlinked working environments. It addresses both economy and end users.

  • In April the Institute for Web Science & Technologies was a guest in Fujian province in China. Dr. Ulrich Wechselberger, managing director of Institute WeST, visited Fuzhou University and the Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University in Fuzhou. Subject of the visit were the joint 1+2 study programmes in Web Science and Computer Science. In these programmes, students study one year in China and two in Germany and earn both a Chinese and a German Master’s degree.

  • In April 2017 the Institute for Web Science and Technologies (WeST) received two international awards recognising their supporting technology for physically impaired people. The web browser GazeTheWeb, which is being developed at WeST, won first prize at the Web Accessibility Challenge. The prize is awarded by the Web For All conference 2017 in Perth/Australia to acknowledge the most innovative and usable technologies to make Web accessible to all people.

  • Citation networks are a crucial element for literature research in many research areas. They ease the identification of relevant sources and can be used for metrics that illustrate the impact of authors and publications. However, particularly in the German social sciences these citation networks are not covered sufficiently.
