Understanding how users search for information has enormous practical implications for both commercial and academic activities. Eye tracking methodologies seem particularly promising in the domain because gaze can be used as a proxy for a user’s attention. Eye tracking can yield much more detailed moment-by-moment observations about how users interact with information. The seminar will focus on interactive multimedia retrieval (how people perform Web search, image ranking, social browsing, video retreival etc.). The topics would cover research approaches that use eye-tracking techniques to help us understand how people use multimedia retrieval tasks, e.g., How do users interact with the list of ranked results of WWW search engines? Do they read the abstracts sequentially from top to bottom, or do they skip links? How many of the results do users evaluate before clicking on a link or reformulating the search?
In this seminar, each student (or group of two students) will present a topic to the class, based on individual papers from the area of gaze analytics for multimedia retrieval. The papers we will cover this semester will be announced here. Additionally, each student (or group) will have to submit a written paper about the topic at the end of the term. There will be a kick-off meeting at the beginning of the semester, in the week before lectures start. The seminar itself will be held in one block at the end of the semester, in the second week after the end of lectures. Following are the topics and some suggested papers.
