Five Papers Accepted at Prestigious Web Conferences

Winter time has been a prolific period for researchers at WeST and has led to numerous results. Five papers about this research have just been accepted at highly competitive Web conferences.

The most prestigious WWW conference in Rio de Janeiro will see the paper "What Is the Added Value of Negative Links in Online Social Networks?" by  Jérôme Kunegis, Julia Preusse and Felix Schwagereit. While most social platforms only foresee the  representation of positive links (e.g. "friendship"), the authors show that negative links (e.g. "distrust") add knowledge about the other part of the network that may be invaluable in order to understand what is going on.

"Preferential Attachment in Online Networks: Measurement and Explanations" by Jérôme Kunegis,  Marcel Blattner, and Christine Moser investigates the growth behavior of  networks. The paper has been accepted by the premier Web Science  conference. Their main conclusion is that preferential attachment is a model that may explain many effects of growth, yet the linearity of the model is an overly strong assumption which has to be generalized to fit observations in the real world.

Two papers were accepted at the prestigious Seventh International AAAI Conference on Weblogs and Social Media (ICWSM 2013). "Structural Changes in Collaborative Knowledge Networks" by Julia Preusse, Jérôme Kunegis, Matthias   Thimm, Thomas Gottron, and Steffen Staab discusses addition and deletion of hyperlinks in different language editions of Wikipedia. Considering addition and deletion as a joint phenomenon affecting Wikipedia as a knowledge network leads to new insights how change may  be predicted by mere structural features.

Nasir Naveed, Thomas Gottron, and Steffen Staab have noted their research on "Feature Sentiment Diversification of User Generated Reviews: The FREuD Approach". The paper aims at helping consumers with selecting product reviews on the Web. In order to achieve a balanced view of products, a small, but maximally diverse set of reviews is generated by their FREuD algorithm considering sentiment as well as product feature coverage.

Finally, research about the Semantic Web culminated in the paper "Locking for Concurrent Transactions on Ontologies" by Stefan Scheglmann, Steffen Staab, Matthias Thimm, and Gerd Gröner, which will be presented in the 10th Extended Semantic Web Conference (ESWC2013). With the proliferation of data and ontologies in the Semantic Web and increased frequency of updates, it has become necessary to allow for updating ontologies while systems are alive and generating  inferences. Hence, access must be synchronized in order to maintain consistency of views and changes. Corresponding mechanisms are proposed and evaluated in this paper.
