The Web changes society and the lifes of its members profoundly. Therefore the German government has announced the foundation of a German Internet Institute that will investigate ethical, legal, economic, and participatory aspects of the development and harness their potential for the commonweal.
The Institute for Web Science and Technologies at the University of Koblenz-Landau is part of a consortium, led by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz University Hannover, that proposes a concept for the Internet Institute. After a first proposal round with many submissons from all over Germany, the consortium and four other teams have been elected by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research to elaborate a detailed and fincal concept.
„We are glad to be involved in such a trendsetting institute and are looking forward to providing our expertise in the upcoming research“, says Prof. Dr. Steffen Staab,
director of the Institute WeST. The second evaluation round will be in spring 2017. Then, the final concept is selected out of the submissions from the five current consortiums. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research will provide 50 Million Euro within the first five years for realising the selected concept. The selection process is supported by a jury of renowned experts from science, economy and society and led by the Oxford Internet Institute.
