Student Research Lab Wikiwhere about Tendencies in Wikipedia Content creates Media Attention

[go to overview]
Wikiwhere is a service originating from a student research lab at the faculty of computer science at the University of Koblenz-Landau. It provides indicators on potential tendencies of Wikipedia content, as it analyses the origin of references in  Wikipedia articles. Thereby users can compare the origin of information that underlies Wikipedia entries in different languages.

Wikiwhere was developed in the Computational Social Science research lab that was offered by Jun.-Prof. Dr. Claudia Wagner and Dr. Fabian Flöck in winter term 2015/2016 at the Institute for Web Science & Technologies. After the team had presented Wikiwhere at the CSS Winter Symposium 2016 in Cologne and published a scientific article on Arxiv, the magazine New Scientist became aware of the service and published an article about Wikiwhere on 13th December 2016.

As the topics misinformation and fake news will become even more important soon, future student research labs at the faculty of computer science will extend Wikiwhere or similar approaches to provide even more insights into possible biases of information on the web.
