  • The way in which companies benefit from open source software (OSS) communities varies and corresponds with the business strategy they maintain. One way of establishing influence in OSS communities is by deploying own resources to an OSS project. Assigning own paid developers to work for an OSS project, like the Linux kernel project, is a suitable means to influence project work. On the other hand, the pertinent literature on user communities and governance in OSS maintains that a large proportion of influence individuals have in a community depends on their position in the community.

  • With the growth of the LOD cloud in the last years, the number of interlinks (i.e. links between resources of different data sets) has also increased considerably. For example, DBpedia currently has a total of 39 million inlinks. In this talk, I will describe ongoing work on the analysis of existing interlinks on the LOD cloud. First, I will make a summary of statistics that other researchers have published. Second, I will report on our findings and future directions.


  • The availability of huge amount of graph-like data poses several data management challenges related to the representation, storage and querying of such data. On one hand, we have standards such as the Resource Description Framework and database solutions optimised for graph-like data. On the other hand, we have graph languages offering different trade-offs between expressiveness and complexity of query evaluation. However, even languages with a polynomial evaluation bound may result prohibitive in practice.

  • Eye tracking data is used to control a butterfly in the game Schau genau! The player collects flowers and classifies photographies of flowers for gathering points. We show in our work that besides the entertaining aspects of the game, the user acquires knowledge on plant species and generates information on the classified photos.


  • The Semantic Web is intended as a web of machine readable data where every data source can be the data provider for different kinds of applica- tions. However, due to a lack of support it is still cumbersome to work with RDF data in modern, object-oriented programming languages, in particular if the data source is only available through a SPARQL endpoint without further documen- tation or published schema information.

  • While the Web was initiated to better support scientists at CERN it has since grown to a gigantic global information and communication medium used by billions of people. The technologies and services often subsumed under the term "Web 2.0" are frequently used by researchers for communication, dissemination, collaboration and knowledge sharing. How researchers can benefit from the Web 2.0 and how can we shape it to better support their work are important questions in our knowledge-based society.

  • Die Studenten des Fachpraktikums "Multi Agent Programming Contest" erzielten den zweiten Platz in diesjährigen Ausgabe des Multiagent Programming Contests.

  • In this talk, I will present my recent work on visualization on networks. I'll show a series of old and new ways of drawing graphs, from KONECT, SocialSensor and work on LiquidFeedback. The presentation will show: (a) Drawing networks with the Laplacian. (b) Drawing networks with PageRank. (c) Drawing networks with Delaunay triangulations. (d) Visualizing networks by downcopying of graph properties. Cases (a) and (b) are classical and serve as an introduction. Case (c) is used for the work on LiquidFeedback and KONECT. Case (d) is used on SocialSensor, and may become a publication.

  • The Multi-Agent Programming Contest is an international competition taking place every year with the goal to encourage multi-agent research. Our research lab was able to participate in it. We are going to give a short overview on the scenario of this year's competition. Moreover, we will present the agents and strategies we have developed.
