  • Markov logic is a robust approach for probabilistic relational knowledge representation that uses a log-linear model of weighted first-order formulas for probabilistic reasoning. This log-linear model always exists but may not represent the knowledge engineer’s intentions adequately. In this paper, we develop a general framework for measuring this coherence of Markov logic networks by comparing the resulting probabilities in the model with the weights given to the formulas.

  • Most successful applications of statistical machine learning focus on response learning or signal-reaction learning where an output is produced as a direct response to an input. An important feature is a quick response time, the basis for, e.g., real-time ad-placement on the Web, real-time address reading in postal automation, or a fast reaction to threats for a biological being.

  • In recent years, answering keyword queries on graph-structured data has emerged as an important research topic. There are two main reasons behind that. On one hand, at the beginning of their search process, many users are uncertain what exactly they are looking for, or which terms should be used to express their query. So instead of using a query language with well defined terms, they prefer to use keywords coming from their mind to build the query, which gives a more intuitive way of specifying information needs.

In ihrer Doktorarbeit untersuchte Julia Perl, wie sich charakteristische Verlinkungsmuster (z.B. zwischen Personen oder Artikeln) in sozialen Netzwerken und Wissensnetzwerken vorhersagen lassen.   • Word segmentation can be considered as a fundamental task in natural language processing. The process to tokenize a given text is the rst step in further analyzing it using for example POS-Tagging, semantic analysis or automated translation mechanisms. While word segmentation in languages using the Latin alphabet is considerably trivial (words can usually be clearly distinguished by stopchars (e.g. whitespaces)), word segmentation in languages not using the Latin alphabet needs further analysis.

  • In order to leverage to potential for connected education unfree alternatives like coursera, udacitz, iversitz an many more are entering the market. Those platforms offer a great user experience while consuming and creating content. Typical Learn management systems like OLAT do not have such a great user experience. Both platforms do not really support creating courses in a collaborative way. Mediawiki a software used for wikipedia but also for the german ZUM-Wiki is a spread alternative for learning materials.

  • Detection of bus lines from GPS data, captured by mobile phones, has many applications in urban transportation. Traditional approaches use distance measures between bus route data and the GPS history to identify the most likely bus lines that a user is traveling in. In the talk I am going to present a Markov model approach that allows to exploit precise detection of the "waiting at bus stop"-event in a natural way. This is joint work with Sven Milker, who is currently writing his master's thesis on this topic.
