The Relevance of Social Capital for Companies involved in Open Source Software Development

[zur Übersicht]

In the context of open and distributed innovation companies make use of technological developments that occur beyond their legal boundaries. To facilitate these developments firms dedicate resources, e.g. to open source software projects, such as the Linux kernel project, through their employees, which are active in and part of the community. These employees build up social capital, inter alia through their relationships with other member of the community. This described situation leads to the main research question of my thesis: how can companies skim social capital through their developers, which are active in the community, and get a return. My talk will give insights into social capital theory and my approach to answer the research question.
