Fake news and politics: Interview by phoenix with Markus Strohmaier from the Computer Science department at the University Koblenz-Landau

Which role do fake news play in politics? Markus Strohmaier, professor at the computer science department at the University of Koblenz-Landau and director of Institute WeST and Peter Schaar, former German Federal Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information, talked about fake news, social media, and politics in an interview with German news channel phoenix.

Strohmaier (starting at minute 2:15) explained how difficult it can be to identify the sources of fake news. Also, internet users often struggle to recognise social bots (computer programs that autonomously post news in social media) as such in soial networks and to evaluate their authenticity. (Semi)automatic tools that cross-check these news against fact checking databases might provide support in this task.

A recording of the interview is freely available at youtube in german.
