Alex Baier is awarded with the University Prize of Koblenz for his master thesis[go to overview]
Alex Baier, staff member of the Institute WeST, is one of eleven prize winners of the seven universities - the University of Koblenz-Landau, the University of Applied Science Koblenz, the Philosophical-Theological University Vallendar (PTHV), the University of Public Administration Rhineland-Palatinate (HöV), the WHU - Otto Beisheim School of Management, the zfh as well as the Deutsche Bundesbank University of Applied Sciences and the Rhineland-Palatinate Police University of Applied Sciences - who was awarded the Koblenz University Prize of the Koblenz Business and Science Alliance. His master thesis “System Identification of Ship Models using Deep Learning” supervised by Prof. Dr. Steffen Staab and Schottel GmbH deals with the prediction of ship movements using deep learning methods. Models of ships are essential for steering and navigation. Classical approaches to modelling are expensive to compute and require in-depth expert knowledge. Due to the growing use of sensors on board ships, it is now possible to automatically identify such models using data-intensive deep learning methods.
Prof. Dr. Dr. Holger Zaborowski, Rector of the Philosophical-Theological University of Vallendar (PTHV), which co-hosted the event this year, emphasized: “The excellent research work is innovative and of high relevance for culture, economy and society. It shows that the academic offers and research possibilities in our region are first-class. This is why many young people come to our region - and stay here even after graduating. Our special thanks go to the sponsors of the University Prize. With their help, the University Prize has become an award that is recognized far beyond the region or the scientific field.”
